Global bunker brokerage Norwegian Oil Trading AS on Thursday (25 January) said it has launched the sale of European Allowances, signalling a strategic move towards sustainable practices.

“The European Allowance market has gained significant importance as countries strive to meet ambitious carbon reduction targets outlined in the Paris Agreement,” it said in a statement.

“Norwegian Oil Trading AS’s decision to enter this market underscores a commitment to environmental responsibility and aligns with global efforts to combat climate change.”

“The sale of European Allowances by Norwegian Oil Trading AS marks a significant shift in the company’s portfolio, emphasising its dedication to sustainable practices. This move is not merely a response to regulatory pressures but a proactive stance towards fostering a greener future.”

European Allowances represent a critical tool in the fight against climate change, allowing companies to offset their carbon emissions by purchasing permits to emit a specific amount of greenhouse gases.

“By participating in this market, Norwegian Oil Trading AS is not only adapting to changing environmental norms but also contributing to the broader initiative of building a low-carbon economy,” the firm added.

“As the global community increasingly acknowledges the importance of sustainable practices, Norwegian Oil Trading AS stands poised to make a meaningful impact in the transition towards a more environmentally conscious future. The launch of the European Allowances sale reflects not only a business strategy but a commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen in the evolving energy landscape.”

According to DNV, the EU Allowances (EUAs) are a type of carbon allowance that allows companies covered by the EU ETS to emit a certain amount of CO2e. EUAs can be bought and sold on the market, and the variable market price of EUAs reflects the cost of reducing emissions.

EUAs can be bought and sold on the secondary market through brokers or online trading platforms. These can be traded on various exchanges and over-the-counter (OTC) markets, and the price fluctuates according to supply and demand.
