The Penang division of Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on Monday (10 February) detained a Liberian-flagged empty cargo vessel under section 491B(l) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 for anchoring in a non-anchorage area without permission, it said.

The unnamed ship was found 8.5 nautical miles north of Teluk Bahang on Monday, said Penang State MMEA Director Captain Hamizan Harun. The cargo vessel was manned by 21 crew members (Captain included), all of whom are Filipinos aged 27 to 67.

If found guilty under section 491B(l) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952, those convicted may face a fine of up to RM 100,000 or a jail term of up to two years or both, according to Captain Hamizan.
