Japanese firms launch study on feasibility of biomethane from animal manure to fuel vessels

Hamanaka Town, JA Hamanaka, Takanashi Milk Products Co., Ltd., Hokkaido Gas Co., Ltd., Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), and MOL Sunflower Ltd. on Monday (19 August) announced the launch of a study on the production and utilisation of biomethane from animal manure from local dairy farms in Hamanaka town, Hokkaido.

In this study, the six organisations will evaluate the feasibility of using all or part of the biomethane produced in Hamanaka Town, where dairy farming is thriving, to fuel factories and vessels.

“Biomethane is an effective energy source for the ultimate goal of decarbonisation because it can be used in current infrastructure for transport and consumption,” the companies said.

The six organisations participating in the collaboration will bring their respective knowledge and experience to this study.
