Hyundai Glovis on Thursday (4 September) said it has signed a contract with SK Gas’ subsidiary Eco Marine Fuel Solution to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker fuel, based in the southeastern region of South Korea.

Based on the agreement, SK Gas will establish a LNG bunkering infrastructure to ensure stable operation of Hyundai Glovis’ low-carbon car carrier fleet.

Hyundai Glovis plans to introduce LNG dual-fuel Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs), starting with five vessels last year, and to deploy more than 30 vessels by 2028.

A Hyundai Glovis representative said: “Securing LNG fuel and bunkering routes are prerequisites for the smooth operation of these vessels, which is why we have decided to collaborate.”

SK Gas and Hyundai Glovis plan to establish an LNG bunkering ecosystem in the southeastern region including Ulsan, which has major ports for PCTCs.

Once the infrastructure is in place, Hyundai Glovis’ LNG dual-fuel PCTCs, which departs from the Far East and heads to Europe, the Middle East, and the United States, will be able to receive fuel from LNG bunkering  vessels secured by Eco Marine Fuel Solutions when calling at ports near the southeastern region.

A Hyundai Glovis official said, “Achieving carbon neutrality is an essential and pressing task for companies to achieve sustainable management.”

“We will achieve carbon neutrality through practical efforts such as introducing low-carbon ships and securing LNG fuel.”
