From operations to trading desks to software, Julie Louise Nielsen, Global Head of Bunker Sales at StormGeo, shares her personal journey through the industry’s digital shift — and how StormGeo is reshaping bunker management for the decarbonization age:

If you’d asked me a decade ago what bunker procurement would look like in 2025, I might have said: “cheaper, faster, and maybe slightly more digital.” What I didn’t expect — and what I’ve seen firsthand — is how bunker planning would become central to shipping’s compliance strategy and decarbonization journey.

With close to 20 years in the shipping industry — spanning roles as a tanker operator, bunker buyer, broker, and refinery trader — I’ve sat on nearly every side of the bunker table. I’ve negotiated fuel deals under time pressure, managed off-spec claims in the middle of the night, and balanced tight margins with even tighter delivery windows.

Back then, bunkering was a tactical game: beat the index, avoid disputes, meet the schedule. But the industry has changed. And so have we.

Breaking Down Silos: How Strategy Replaced Price Chasing

When I joined StormGeo, I saw an opportunity to bring bunker strategy into a broader operational and environmental context. I wasn’t just going to sell digital solutions — I set out to help clients shift their mindset from price-driven procurement to long-term, compliance-aware planning, and that’s exactly what I’m doing today.

One pivotal moment for me came during my time at Maersk Tankers, where I was building the in-house bunker procurement desk from the ground up. We replaced outdated manual processes with streamlined digital workflows, and more importantly, we broke down silos between departments — a major shift in a pool-operated company like Maersk Tankers.

Together, we transformed the way bunker planning and procurement were done, from chartering to technical. We created a space where we were all in this together — no longer focusing solely on our own areas. Today, no function can succeed in isolation. Chartering can’t fix the next voyage if operations haven’t executed proper bunker planning, and procurement can’t buy the right fuel without understanding the vessel’s technical needs.

That experience reminded me how fragmented departments can derail even the best intentions — and how vital integrated decision-making has become.

When Bunker Planning Became a Compliance Tool

Today, I speak with bunker managers who are no longer judged solely on cost savings. They’re also measured by their ability to navigate emissions regulations and safeguard environmental ratings.

Regulations like FuelEU Maritime, the EU ETS, and sulphur caps are reshaping behavior far beyond their geographic borders. I see shipowners and operators outside Europe proactively adapting, anticipating the ripple effects. Compliance isn’t regional anymore — it’s strategic.

Today, poor — or absent — bunker planning isn’t just a missed cost-saving opportunity. It can lead to penalties, degraded CII ratings, and lost credibility. That’s why StormGeo’s approach resonates: we integrate bunker procurement with voyage optimization, weather routing, and predictive emissions data.

One client recently told me that using our platform helped them anticipate and mitigate EU ETS exposure for an entire voyage series. Another fine-tuned their procurement timing and significantly reduced fuel overconsumption risk. Others have cut time spent on bunker planning and procurement by up to 75%.

Why I’m Still in This Game After Almost 20 Years

This industry runs deep in my professional DNA. I’ve sat at the ops desk and on the trading floor. I understand the pressure of making quick decisions with incomplete information. I also know how empowering it is to finally have data you can trust — and tools that connect the dots between commercial goals and environmental responsibilities.

That’s why I advocate for a more human approach to digital transformation. At StormGeo, we don’t build solutions in a vacuum. We build them in conversation — with the buyer, the operator, the technical team — and with a deep understanding of the real-world challenges they face.

From Back Office to Boardroom: The Future of Bunker Management

What excites me most is seeing bunker management step out of the shadows. It’s no longer just a background task that only gets attention when something goes wrong. Today, it’s a strategic function — one that drives compliance, supports sustainability targets, and directly impacts the bottom line. It’s earning a seat at the table with banks, investors, and boards who now view fuel strategy as a critical part of a company’s ESG and commercial narrative.

StormGeo is at the heart of that shift. And I’m proud to bring not only our platform — but also my lived experience — into every conversation with our partners.

Together, we’re redefining what smart bunkering looks like in a decarbonizing world and in the future.

If you’re ready to rethink your bunker strategy, now’s the time — because the compliance era isn’t coming. It’s already here.
