Detained tanker “Gas Venus” involved in Gibraltar bunker spill released after paying cash bond

Gibraltar Port Authority on Thursday (10 August) confirmed LPG tanker Gas Venus that was involved in a recent bunker spill has been released from detention after paying a fine.
It said the detention order had been lifted under the authority of the Captain of the Port upon the receipt by the Gibraltar Port Authority of a cash bond to the sum of £1.5 million (USD 1.9 milion).
“This ensures that the costs of all oil spill response and cleanup operations are covered. The vessel’s departure from Gibraltar will have no effect on the ongoing investigation as all evidence from the Gas Venus has already been collected,” it said in a statement.
“Cleanup operations remain focused on the area of Rosia Bay and continue to progress well.”
Manifold Times previously reported LPG tanker Gas Venus was taking bunkers when it experienced an overflow of its tanks in the southern part of the Western Anchorage on 1 August.
Following that, the Captain of the port confirmed that a rough estimate of between 1,000 and 2,000 litres of Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) was spilled to sea during a bunkering operation.
The Gibraltar Port Authority on 5 August confirmed that the Gibraltar Port opened for bunkering operations, following the bunker spill.
