China: CIMC Enric green methanol plant wins ISCC EU certification

CIMC Green Energy Low Carbon Technology (Zhanjiang) Co., Ltd. (CIMC Green Energy), a subsidiary of CIMC Enric, on Friday (21 November) said it successfully obtained the ISCC EU green certification for its methanol production unit in early November this year.

This development follows the company’s earlier attainment of multiple green certifications for biomass feedstock and storage as well as sales operations, marking the final step in securing full green certification for the biomass liquid fuel supply chain in CIMC Enric’s Zhanjiang project.

“This successful certification signifies that CIMC Enric’s green methanol products fully comply with REDIII regulations and the EU ISCC sustainability certification requirements (covering the entire product lifecycle), obtaining a ‘passport’ to integrate into the global renewable fuel supply chain,” the company said. 

This is also the first bio-methanol project in South China to receive ISCC EU certification.

“CIMC Enric’s successful acquisition of the ISCC EU certification represents a significant breakthrough in the domestic and international renewable liquid fuel production project field,” it added. 

The company said it is the world’s first green methanol production project using a diversified biomass feedstock mixture, and the first successful certification case for a pure biomass gasification technology route to synthesise green methanol, without coupling with green hydrogen. 

CIMC Enric said it places great emphasis on supply chain compliance and risk management. Through an intelligent integrated data management system, it achieves full-chain traceability, and has made new breakthroughs in product carbon footprint management, fully demonstrating the project management team’s comprehensive and meticulous management capabilities.

“CIMC Enric will use this certification as a starting point to ensure the large-scale production of green methanol through technological innovation and refined management, accelerate the adoption of advanced low-carbon technologies, and leverage the strategic geographical location of CIMC Enric’s first demonstration plant to provide global shipping industry customers with a more efficient and economical new option for decarbonising marine fuels,” the company said. 

“This will help customers effectively reduce EU carbon allowance costs (EUA) and significantly enhance the compliance pooling effect of their fleets to achieve zero carbon emissions, thereby comprehensively reducing compliance costs for shipping companies.”
