The Busan Port Authority (BPA) on Friday (9 August) announced that the port successfully completed the first simultaneous LNG bunkering and container ship unloading operation in South Korea.
Some 270 metric tonnes (mt) of LNG bunker fuel was supplied to 2,000 TEU container ship Visby II, operated by French shipping firm CMA CGM, by a dedicated LNG bunkering vessel via a ship-to-ship bunkering operation.
The entire operation was completed at Pier 5 of Busan New Port after 14 hours from 8am to 10pm on 8 August.
The operation was done in collaboration with Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Korea LNG Bunkering Co., Ltd., and Busan Port Operator.
With the success of this demonstration, Busan Port said it has proven that simultaneous bunkering and unloading of LNG-powered container ships is possible, enhancing the port’s competitiveness.
BPA President Kang Jun-seok, said: “In the future, the capacity to supply eco-friendly ship fuel will be a key factor in assessing the competitiveness of ports.”
“We believe that the success of this simultaneous operation will be an important opportunity to further enhance the competitiveness of Busan Port.”
