China: CIMC Enric starts producing bio-methanol bunker fuel with new Zhanjiang plant

CIMC Enric on Tuesday (16 December) said its first domestic mass-produced bio-methanol (green methanol) plant was put into operation in Zhanjiang, Guangdong.
The project is one of the earliest large-scale projects in China to achieve a closed-loop chain of “biomass waste – green methanol – shipping fuel”.
“Its commissioning marked CIMC Enric’s strategic extension from hydrogen energy to advanced liquid fuels in the field of clean fuels, providing a practical and feasible decarbonisation solution for the global shipping industry,” the company said.
The company said the first phase of the project has an annual production capacity of 50,000 metric tonnes (mt) of green methanol and is the first mass-produced bio-methanol project in China.
“The GHG emission reduction rate throughout the product’s entire life cycle is over 85% . The entire chain, from raw materials to methanol and subsequent trading and storage, has obtained ISCC EU certification,” CIMC Enric added.
Leveraging its proximity to Zhanjiang Port and its abundant biomass resources, the company said this project can reach downstream markets in the Greater Bay Area, Singapore, or other major international ports, representing a significant breakthrough in the large-scale development of China’s green methanol industry.
On the day of the commissioning ceremony, representatives from many shipowners such as Maersk Group and CMA CGM, green chemical industry partner BASF Group, and marine fuel trader and bunkering companies, China Marine Fuel and Sinopec Fuel Oil Sales, attended the event.
Mr. Gao Xiang, President of CIMC Group and Chairman of CIMC Enric, said the company will continue to provide green methanol fuel that meets the highest international shipping standards to the global market, particularly Southeast Asia and Europe.
Mr. Leo Yang, Executive Director and President of CIMC Enric, said that the completion and commissioning of the project marked a solid step forward in the large-scale and commercial application of biomass energy, providing global shipping industry customers with a more efficient and economical new option for decarbonising bunker fuels, and making due contributions to addressing global climate change.
