Japanese shipping major NYK on Tuesday (25 November) said its vessel has used 251,017 metric of B24, a blended marine fuel containing 24% second-generation fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) derived from nonfood sources and certified under ISCC.

This comes following the company launching long-term trials aimed at full-scale implementation of biofuel usage in fiscal year (FY) 2024. This marked a significant increase, about 40 times more, over the 6,287 mt used in FY 2023.

The company said this in its latest report, Progress Report 2025 — NYK Group Decarbonization Story (Progress Report 2025), detailing the advances made in the NYK Decarbonization Story (NDS).

In November 2023, the NYK Group announced the NDS, setting ambitious targets: a 45% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 (compared to FY2021), and net-zero emissions for Scope 1, 2, and 3 by 2050. The company is moving forward with initiatives designed to achieve these goals including the use of alternative fuels such as biofuels.

NYK added it has implemented initiatives in FY2024 to address challenges related to the long-term safe use of biofuels.

The initiatives include development of BioxiGuard, an antioxidant, additive for biofuels and development of Yunic800Eco, a fuel additive designed to improve the stability of blended fuels and enhance fuel efficiency.

Since June 2025, NYK has commenced the continuous use of bio-LNG fuel on its LNG-powered car carriers.

The bio-LNG fuel is supplied by Titan’s bunkering vessel at the Port of Zeebrugge in Belgium.

“Starting with the supply to two vessels—Daisy Leader in June and Sumire Leader in July—we will integrate LNG biofuel into our routine operations,” the company added.
