Hamburg Port Authority (HAP) on Thursday (24 July) said Flotte Hamburg (Hamburg Fleet) is testing 100% Hydrogated Vegetable Oil (HVO 100) fuel, produced by Shell in collaboration with Friedrich G. Frommann, on three of its vessels.

The HVO 100 used by Hamburg Fleet is made from food waste and is completely palm oil-free. It meets the sustainability requirements of the EU’s RED II directive.

The Hafenkapitän will be the first vessel to participate in the trial. Other vessels participating in the test operation include survey and sounding vessel Deepenschriewer III and the transport and inspection vessel Neßsand.

If the tests are successful, HAP said HVO 100 could be used by the entire Hamburg fleet in the future.

Karsten Schönewald, Managing Director of Flotte Hamburg, said: “Even though Hamburg Fleet is primarily focusing on electrification and innovative propulsion systems, we will only be able to achieve our ambitious greenhouse gas targets by complementing our fleet with innovative fuels such as HVO 100.”

“HVO 100 is the most pragmatic interim solution for inland waterway vessels. We are proud to contribute to establishing HVO 100 as a fuel in Hamburg and to be one of the pioneers in the Port of Hamburg.”
