Lauritzen Bulkers highlights hurdle in securing smaller quantities of bio bunker fuel

Lauritzen Bulkers on Tuesday (18 February) said it faces challenges in a still-developing biofuel market as an operator and vessel owner.

The company said one key hurdle is securing small fuel parcels that meet the 2% reduction target for time-chartered vessels.

“Finding suppliers capable of delivering 40-100 metric tonnes (mt) of B20-B30 fuels remains difficult, highlighting the need for further biofuel availability and infrastructure advancements,” it said.

“Despite these challenges, Lauritzen Bulkers remains committed to overcoming logistical barriers and integrating biofuels into its fleet operations.”

Lauritzen Bulkers also reported that one of its time-chartered vessels was recently bunkered with VLSFO B20 biofuel in Gibraltar for a voyage from Chittagong to Otranto.

The biofuel, supplied by Peninsula and Peninsula’s Hercules Sky bunker barge, contained 20% FAME biocomponent and was sourced by DeaL Energy, which manages Lauritzen Bulkers’ bunker and biofuel procurement.

“This successful bunkering demonstrates Lauritzen Bulkers’ proactive approach to compliance and sustainability and strategic collaboration with vessel owners,” it said.

“Strategic partnerships and continuous innovation pave the way for the broader adoption of biofuels in the maritime industry.”
