The SCMA Distinguished Speaker Series (DSS), a biennial event, will spotlight new business opportunities and legal issues surrounding the pathway towards the use of alternative bunker fuels to achieve maritime decarbonisation.
The event, organised by Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration (SCMA), will be held on 17 April at the Suntec Convention and Exhibition Centre in Singapore.
This year’s DSS topic is Alternative Fuels to achieve Maritime Decarbonisation: Business and Legal Opportunities. Speakers at the event will offer valuable perspectives on topics such as maritime arbitration, advancements in legal or arbitration, and industry trends affecting global shipping and international trade sectors.
The distinguished speaker for the SCMA DSS will be ISO Secretary-General, Mr Sergio Mujica. Combining his experience as Deputy Secretary-General at the World Customs Organization in Brussels from 2010 to 2017 and several leadership positions in the government of Chile, Sergio has unique global perspectives of international trade and sustainability.
SCMA highlighted that despite technical and economic difficulties, the shift towards alternative fuels opens up distinctive opportunities in business and law that must be carefully navigated and explored.
“Adopting new energy sources, operational costs associated with consumption, and the potential for economies of scale are some commercial and financial implications. These should be assessed and evaluated by stakeholders,” it said.
“There are also opportunities to provide net-zero pathways, despite environmental challenges such as CO2-equivalent emissions. These are critical to address climate change. Developing robust legal and commercial frameworks are critical to address climate change to manage these issues.”
Note: SCMA Distinguished Speaker Series is now open for registration. More information regarding the event including registration and programme can be found here.
