The Johor state division of Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on Thursday (5 March) said it detained an unnamed Hong Kong-flagged oil tanker and two Singapore-registered supply boats.

MMEA Tanjung Sedili Maritime Zone Director Captain Mohd Zulfadli Nayan said the vessels were flagged by the patrol team some 12.3 nautical miles east of Tanjung Balau at about 11 am on Wednesday as they were sailing within suspicious close proximity.

Initial investigations found the cargo tanker with twelve Indian and twelve Filipino crew on board (aged 20 to 50 years old). Whereas both supply boats had four Indonesian, two Indians, and one Malaysian crew on board all of whom are aged 25 to 50 years old, he said.

“Both supply boats operating in Malaysian waters failed to produce relevant certification for neither the vessel nor the fuel cargo,” said Zulfadli.

The cargo tanker and supply boats have breached sections 65K (a), 491B(1)(k), 491B (1)(i) and 474 of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952, stated MMEA.

If found guilty, a penalty of up to MYR 100,000 (USD 23,578) or imprisonment of not more than two years or both is carried under section 491B(1)(k), 491B (1)(i). Whereas section 65K (a) and 474 carry a fine of MYR 10,000 or imprisonment of not more than a year.
