Spain’s Algeciras claims third place in Europe’s LNG bunkering league

The Port of Algeciras on Friday (27 March) reported that it supplied ships with a total of 333,833 cubic metres (m3) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) through 78 ship-to-ship (STS ) bunkering operations in 2025.

The port authority said, citing data provided by GASNAM, the supply of LNG in the Bay of Algeciras already places it at the forefront of Iberian Peninsula ports and in the top three in Europe, after Rotterdam and Marseille Fos

Of that total volume, it is worth noting that almost 16% of the product supplied, a total of 51,923 m3, was liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG), of renewable origin.

“This figure positions the Port of Algeciras as the largest international supply point for this type of sustainable fuel,” the port authority said.

This milestone has been made possible thanks to the commitment to bioLNG by the three operators authorized by the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) to carry out this type of operation in the Bay: Axpo, Shell, and Peninsula; as well as the support provided by Enagas—through its subsidiary Scale Green Energy—to the necessary infrastructure for the supply of LNG and bioLNG.

On the Iberian Peninsula, nine barges are capable of supplying LNG with another four under construction. Five of these ships are based in the Port of Algeciras.

According to GASNAM, 2025 was a turning point not only for the Port of Algeciras in particular, but for the Iberian Peninsula as a whole, “which has gone from being a spectator to a key player in sustainable maritime transport.”

“GASNAM predicts that if this trend continues, Spain and Portugal will overtake Northern European countries by 2026 in the race for sustainable bunkering,” the port authority said.
