One dead, six injured in “Chuang Yi” oil tanker explosion 300 km east off Hong Kong

The 2000-built 9,995 dwt Panama-registered oil tanker Chuang Yi reportedly exploded 300 km east off Hong Kong on Saturday (16 April).

The development resulted in one person being killed with six injured, according to a report from the Hong Kong Marine Department which received a notification of the incident at around 4:05 pm on the same day.

Following, the Hong Kong Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (HKMRCC) immediately coordinated with the Government Flying Service (GFS) of Hong Kong to conduct a search and rescue operation to evacuate the victims from the tanker manned by a total of 11 crew.

HKMRCC noted it will be coordinating with commercial or fishing vessels to aid with search and rescue operations due to the incident taking place in international waters.

Hong Kong authorities are also consider requesting assistance from other countries such as Vietnam, Philippines, China and Taiwan.
