Marine fuels supplier Monjasa on Thursday (23 April) said disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz are reshaping global bunker fuel demand, with West Africa at the forefront of the impact.
The company’s data showed that demand in West Africa has increased significantly since the Iran crisis erupted, with particularly strong activity in Walvis Bay, Namibia and Lomé, Togo.
Casper Borgen, General Manager, Middle East & Africa, said: “The increase is mainly driven by availability issues following disruptions at major bunker hubs such as Fujairah, UAE rather than more vessels re‑routing.
“Initially, it was challenging to match this sudden imbalanced supply and demand across the region. Today, however, our logistics and eight tankers are well-positioned to handle the activity, and we are still looking for ways to further optimise our fleet.”
The company added that it maintains a positive availability outlook for the main fuel grades of VLSFO, MGO and HSFO due to a mix of existing local sourcing contracts and additional imports.
Its West Africa operations are managed by the company’s teams in Dubai, Luanda and Walvis Bay.
