Offshore support vessel provider Icon Offshore Bhd on Monday (12 August) confirmed that two crew members were killed in an incident that occurred on 2 August at approximately 10.30 pm at the Sapar Alpha platform near Bintulu, involving the vessel Icon Amara.

According to news reports, an explosion occurred in the engine room which led to the fatalities and one serious injury.

“ICON’s Emergency Response Team was immediately mobilised to provide the necessary support to the affected crew members and their next-of-kin,” it said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and our deepest sympathies to the injured and their families. The company is committed to offering all possible assistance during this difficult time.”

The firm said an investigation into the cause of the incident is currently underway, and Icon is fully cooperating with the relevant authorities.
