Port of Kiel on Thursday (15 June) said two cruise ships bunkered LNG on the same day for the first time, following its first LNG bunkering operation last month.

The LNG bunker operations which took place on 10 June at the port marked “another premiere of a special kind”.

“While the AIDAnova was supplied with LNG by Titan at the Ostseekai for the third time, it was the first time for the MSC Euribia. The newly christened cruise ship was supplied with LNG by the Finnish company Gasum as part of its first call in Kiel at the Ostuferhafen,” it said in a social media post.

“We want to enable shipping companies to take every step towards greater climate friendliness in our port – this also applies to fuelling with LNG as an important bridging technology.” said Dirk Claus, Managing Director of SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co. KG.

As port operator, Port of Kiel said it created the legal framework for the refuelling of alternative fuels in the port in 2022.

“The refuelling of hydrogen, which is widely considered the fuel of the future, is therefore also possible in Kiel. The Port of Kiel is thus following its clear environmental strategy: in addition to the goal of climate neutrality for its own companies by 2030, the ships in the port are also to be supported in reducing emissions,” it added.
