ENGINE on Fuel Switch Snapshot: B100–LBM spreads tighten sharply in Rotterdam

Once a week, bunker intelligence platform ENGINE will publish a snapshot of alternative and conventional bunker fuel prices in the world’s two biggest bunkering hubs. The following is the latest snapshot:

  • B100 premiums over LBM drop to $87-303/mt
  • Rotterdam’s B100 over $500/mt cheaper than LSMGO
  • LNG’s discounts to LSMGO narrow sharply

A whopping $104/mt drop in Rotterdam’s B100 price has sharply narrowed its premiums over the port’s 0 gCO2e/MJ liquefied biomethane (LBM) benchmark.

B100’s premium over LBM when bunkered on vessels with diesel slow speed (diesel SS) engines has dropped by $169/mt to $303/mt. For vessels with Otto medium speed (Otto MS) engines, the premium has narrowed by $172/mt on the week, to $87/mt.

On the other hand, B100 has become drastically cheaper compared to conventional fuels in Rotterdam.

B100’s discount to VLSFO has widened by $132/mt to $357/mt over the past week, and its discount to LSMGO has widened by $131/mt to $520/mt.

Conventional fuels still retain cost advantages against B100 in Singapore. HSFO and LSMGO discounts to B100 have inched lower by $1–11/mt, while VLSFO’s discount to B100 has edged up by $2/mt in the past week.

Liquid fuels

Rotterdam’s conventional fuel benchmarks have jumped $27–28/mt higher over the past week. Its VLSFO price rise has outpaced a $6/mt rise in front-month ICE Brent futures.

HSFO and LSMGO deliveries are readily available with short notice of 2–4 days in the ARA bunkering hub. But VLSFO supplies may require longer lead times of more than a week, a trader told ENGINE.

Rotterdam’s B100 price has slumped $104/mt lower over the past week, with some support from higher Dutch ZRE A ticket prices. The assessed ZRE A ticket price has gone up from €155/mtCO2e ($531/mtB100) a week ago to €164/mtCO2e ($560/mtB100) now.

The B100 price drop has reduced the effective cost of bunkering and consuming the fuel on EU-EU voyages to $488/mt.

Singapore’s B100 price has gained $19/mt over the past week.

The port’s B100 sales have increased from zero in 2024 to 26,000 mt in 2025, according to preliminary data from the port authority.

Liquid gases

LNG prices in Rotterdam (+$78–80/mt) and Singapore (+$89–90/mt) have risen sharply over the past week, depending on a vessel’s engine type.

The surges have come as both the front-month Dutch TTF natural gas contract and the front-month NYMEX JKM contract have spiked amid heightened geopolitical concerns and forecasts of colder temperatures across northwest Europe and northeast Asia.

LNG’s discounts to LSMGO in Rotterdam have narrowed by $50–53/mt over the past week to $28–269/mt. Its discounts to LSMGO in Singapore have decreased by $69–70/mt to $11–131/mt.

Rotterdam’s 0 gCO2e/MJ LBM has jumped $66–68/mt higher over the past week. That has not kept up with the port’s LNG price rise, and LBM’s discounts to LNG have widened by $11–12/mt to $576–587/mt.

PIL's LNG dual-fuel boxship “Kota Elok” arrives in Singapore on maiden call

Singapore-based Pacific International Lines Pte Ltd on Monday (20 July) said its first 13,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessel, Kota Elok, recently made her maiden call to Singapore on 15 July.

As the first of 13 new 13,000 TEU vessels joining its fleet, Kota Elok is equipped to operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and low-sulphur fuel oil that helps reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. 

The vessel also incorporated energy-saving features and digital technologies to reduce fuel consumption and enhance operational performance, as well as a bow windshield to improve aerodynamics, contributing to improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions over the course of long-haul voyages.

“Following Singapore, Kota Elok will continue her voyage on our East Coast Service 1 (ES1) route to South America, calling at ports in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina before returning to Asia,” the company said in a social media post. 

Kota Elok also became PIL’s first vessel to receive Lloyd’s Register certification for compliance with the IACS UR E26 and UR E27 cyber security requirements.

Developed by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), UR E26 and UR E27 are mandatory cyber resilience requirements for newbuild vessels contracted from 1 July 2024.

CIMC SOE secures order for 12,000-cbm LNG bunkering vessel from Sinopec Clean Energy

China’s Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering Co., Ltd. (CIMC SOE) recently signed a contract with Sinopec (Beijing) Clean Energy Co., Ltd. to build a 12,000-cubic metre (m3) LNG bunkering vessel, according to Chinese maritime media.

The vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2028 and will support Sinopec’s efforts to expand its presence in the marine clean energy sector.

Once operational, the vessel is expected to strengthen Sinopec’s domestic coastal LNG bunkering network and help address gaps in China’s LNG bunkering infrastructure.

With this signing , CIMC Pacific Offshore Engineering’s LNG bunkering vessel orderbook is further strengthened, maintaining its leading position in the global market for small and medium-sized LNG bunkering vessels.

The contract also marked another milestone for CIMC SOE, which has seen a sharp increase in orders and business performance this year amid a surge in domestic LNG vessel demand.

ABS awards AiP to Korean institute for SMR-powered container ship concept design

Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) on Thursday (16 July) received Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its concept design of a 15,000 TEU Small Modular Reactor (SMR)-powered container ship utilising Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) technology.

KRISO said the AiP recognises the technical feasibility and safety of its concept design, marking an important milestone toward the development of next-generation nuclear-powered commercial ships.

“This achievement demonstrates international recognition of KRISO’s technological capabilities in the rapidly evolving field of nuclear-powered shipping, supporting the transition toward low-carbon maritime transport,” it said. 

Building on this milestone, KRISO will continue advancing basic and detailed ship design, paving the way for future demonstration and commercialisation of SMR-powered vessels. 

Through continued R&D and international collaboration, KRISO remains committed to strengthening next-generation maritime technologies and contributing to the safe deployment of nuclear propulsion in the maritime industry.
