The China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) on Friday (19 November) said it has successfully completed a trial voyage of a pure supercapacitor-powered passenger ferry named Xin Ecology.

The vessel is the world’s first ferry powered by pure supercapacitors and will provide new demonstration applications for new energy ships along the coast of the country’s inland rivers, it notes.

Xin Ecology measures 65 meters long, 14.5 meters wide, 4.3 meters deep and is supported by a 2.5 MW DC shore power system charging solution.

A variety of technologies with independent intellectual property rights, including electric propulsion and energy storage control, were used to ensure uninterrupted operation of the ferry.

The vessel is scheduled to operate by the end of the year.
