China: New bonded lube oil facility under construction in Zhoushan

16 Sep 2022

The first phase of constructing a Zhoushan marine lube oil storage and supply base on Xiaogan Island will begin this year, according to a Chinese local daily on Friday (9 September).

Phase I of the project will involve building a 3,000 square metre warehouse for lube oil which will be used to improve the supply capacity of external anchorages, relieve the potential external anchorage demand and further enhance the city’s service capabilities in bonded marine lube oil.

“Next year, the construction of the second phase of the project will proceed. By then, the marine lubricant oil warehouse will reach 6,000 square metres, so that international ships can enjoy a one-stop supply service for marine fuel oil and marine lube oil at Zhoushan Port.” Zhang Yan, general manager of Zhoushan China Gas Holdings Limited (Zhoushan China Gas).

According to statistics, for every 100 metric tonnes (mt) of marine fuel used, 1 mt of lube oil is needed.

Since 2018, Zhoushan China Gas Holdings Limited has tried to supply lube oil to sailing ships at the outer anchorage with a current annual supply of about 3,000 mt. However, due to the lack of a lube oil storage centre in the city, the logistics cost and supply are not efficient, so vessels outside the anchorage area cannot get their orders fulfilled.

This makes the construction of Zhoushan marine lube oil storage and supply base particularly important.

“After the base is completed, it will be a one-stop service of marine fuel oil and lube oil and it will provide more efficient and convenient services for ship owners,” said Zhang Yan.

The high supply of marine fuel oil and lube oil will gradually build Zhoushan into a fuel and lube oil filling centre in Northeast Asia.
