Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS) on Thursday (8 October) released a new report, examining ethanol’s technical usability as a marine fuel.
Drawing on laboratory testing, industry developments, and techno-economic analysis, the report explores how ethanol could be applied across different vessel and engine types, as well as the technical, operational, and safety considerations that must be addressed.
The report provides insights into emerging use cases, current challenges, and potential pathways for implementation, offering stakeholders a deeper understanding of ethanol’s role in the future fuel landscape.
“As the shipping industry seeks pathways to decarbonization, access to scalable low-emissions fuels remains one of the key challenges,” MMMCZCS said.
“While fuels such as methanol and ammonia continue to gain momentum, interest is growing in ethanol’s potential as a near- and medium-term contributor to the maritime energy transition, supported by existing production capacity, established supply chains, and the potential to leverage parts of today’s fuel infrastructure with relatively limited adaptation.”
