Hapag-Lloyd on Monday (5 October) said it has successfully completed its first SIMOPS bunkering of ISCC EU-certified biomethanol supplied by Goldwind to container ship Seaspan Amazon in Busan, South Korea.
The company said the operation marked an important step in bringing alternative marine fuels from production to practical use.
“Produced at Goldwind’s integrated facility in Hinggan League, China, the biomethanol was delivered through an international supply chain and bunkered while other vessel and port activities continued in parallel,” it said in a social media post.
The milestone builds on the long-term fuel supply agreement signed in 2024, under which Goldwind is expected to supply 250,000 metric tonnes (mt) of a blend of bio- and e-methanol annually from the end of 2027.
“By securing an early biomethanol delivery, both companies are already gaining operational experience and advancing the logistics required for future large-scale supply,” the company added.
Together with recent biomethanol bunkering operations involving the Seaspan Amazon, and Seaspan Yangtze, Hapag-Lloyd said the delivery provided valuable experience as it prepares additional vessels capable of operating on methanol.
