Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport on Tuesday (27 May) published guidelines to regulate ship-to-ship (STS) bunkering of LNG and bio-LNG in Italian ports.
The ministry said the guidelines provide the general criteria that must be adopted by local maritime authorities for the drafting of local port regulations for the in-port bunkering of LNG ships, applicable to LNG and Bio LNG bunkering operations.
“This is the first time in Europe that common rules have been established that affect all national ports with regard to ship-to-ship bunkering operations,” it said in a statement.
The ministry added the aim of the guidelines is to guarantee a high safety standard for STS bunkering operations, as well as to allow port authorities to adopt a rational and homogeneous discipline for carrying out the operations.
The guidelines were developed by the ministry with the support of the General Command of the Port Authority Corps, the National Fire Brigade Corps and the Trade Associations.
