Vietnam: Coast Guard detains LPG tanker “Venus 08” over alleged illegal oil transfer

The Vietnam Coast Guard on Wednesday (27 May) said its Coast Guard Command Region 1 discovered three vessels allegedly performing illegal oil transfers at sea while the team was performing scheduled patrol rounds.

The ships were sighted at 2330hrs on Monday (25 May) night at the mooring area of Hon Dau, Hai Phong district and displayed signs of suspicious behaviour, according to a statement.

Initial investigations by the patrol team revealed the LPG tanker named Venus 08 was suspected to be transferring oil with two other iron-hull ships that had no serial number.

The Captain on board Venus 08 claimed his vessel was processing 25,000 litres of waste oil for the two ships. 

He added that he was supposed to be carrying a cargo of gas from the Dung Quat Industrial Zone (Quang Ngai) to Hai Phong port for delivery and had all the proper documents for the cargo.

He claimed he anchored at Hon Dau to wait for port pilot guidance before proceeding inside the port. 

The patrol has since escorted the vessels to Got harbour, Hai Phong to conduct verifications, and further investigations in accordance with Vietnamese law.

The final meeting for Tiger LNG Shipping Pte Ltd has been scheduled to take place on 29 June, according to the company’s liquidators on a notice posted on Friday (29 May) on the Government Gazette.

The meetings will be held at 10.30am at 190 Middle Road #17-05 Fortune Centre Singapore 188979. 

The meeting is being held for the purpose of having an account laid before the meeting showing the manner in which the winding up has been conducted and the property of the company disposed of, and of hearing any explanation that may be given by the liquidator.
