A Judge at the Singapore State Court on Thursday (19 December) sentenced Doan Xuan Than, the Captain of Prime South to five-and-a-half years in jail in relation to a multi dollar fuel heist from Shell Eastern Petroleum’s Pulau Bukom refinery.

Prosecutors said the misappropriate was on a “unprecedented scale”, according to local media.

Doan Xuan Than received about USD 5.7 million (SGD 7.7 million) worth of stolen marine gas oil. He claimed that he earned about USD 70,000 to USD 90,000 in total up until his arrest.

He had worked with three other men, who remain at large. They split the profits among themselves from selling the stolen fuel.

The Shell Pulau Bukom refinery is oil major Shell’s export centre in the Asia-Pacific region and its largest petrochemical production facility.

In August 2017, a Shell representative filed a report saying the firm had lost about SGD 2.98 million worth of fuel in April that year.

To date, Doan is the second person sentenced at the Singapore court in relation to the Shell Pulau Bukom oil heist case. The first was the former Chief Officer of Prime South.
