State-owned port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III (Persero), also known as Pelindo III, on Monday (28 October) said it is ready to invest Rp 70 billion (USD $4,998,000) to expand the use of cold ironing at all port areas under its management with new facilities.

The company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indonesian state-owned electricity supplier Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) to support the development.

“Today we signed a MoU with PLN to use PLN surplus electricity on shore connections,” said Doso Agung, President Director of Pelindo III.

“By utilising the shore connection, automatically the vessel's fuel needs will be reduced when it rests at the port.”

“From 35 shore connection points installed at 13 port and terminal locations in the Pelindo III region, we are ready to invest Rp 70 billion and require a total electric power of 49,569 kilovolt amperes (kVA).”

Captain Ronald C. Schouten, Branch Manager of PT Temas Line Surabaya, a cold ironing customer of Perlindo III, said the company’s vessels are able to reduce bunker fuel consumption and increase cost efficiencies by using cheaper electricity when connected to the cold ironing network.

“We can also use the extra time to carry out maintenance, where in general our ship's engine has never stopped operating,” he adds.

“As a shipping company, we can feel many benefits from this breakthrough. We hope that this shore connection facility can be expanded to all ports in Indonesia.”
