Fuel additive company Infineum on Thursday (20 February) introduced ‘Infineum B201’, a fuels additive package developed to provide onboard operating benefits in two critical areas: fuel stability and compatibility.
Infineum B201 can also positively influence all tests mentioned in the CIMACs PAS guideline, it states.
The company has recently conducted a trial with an oil major to validate the ability of the additive package to stabilise Total Sediment Potential (TSP) while safely preventing instability of VLSFO on board.
The trial also proved Infineum B201 was able to broaden the fuel blending window for subsequent stable and compatible VLSFO fuel blends.
“One of the major routes for VLSFO production to meet IMO 2020 legislation is the blending of high sulphur residual streams (aromatic) with low sulphur distillate streams (paraffinic) to produce compliant fuels” explains Steve Benwell, Global Fuels Venture Manager.
“However, this comes with risk as asphaltene-containing aromatic streams tend to be incompatible with paraffinic components and can result in asphaltene drop out which can significantly hinder ship operating conditions, or in severe cases cause engine failure.”
