World’s first pure battery bunker tanker “Asahi” completes first car carrier refuelling op

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. and Asahi Tanker Co., Ltd. on Wednesday (27 April) said bunkering vessel Asahi — the world’s first pure battery tanker to operate completely on electricity — delivered marine fuel to the MOL-operated car carrier Victorious Ace at the Daikoku Pier C-1 Wharf in Yokohama on 26 April.

This marked a commemorative moment for the ships’ first bunkering operation.

Large-capacity lithium-ion batteries on the Asahi Tanker owned and operated Asahi provided power to every phase of its operations, including cargo handling, berthing/unberthing, and navigation.

This results in zero emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) from the vessel.

The tanker delivers outstanding environmental performance, and is expected to reduce crewmembers’ workloads by reducing engine maintenance requirements.

MOL and Asahi Tanker will continue bunkering activities using the pure battery bunker tanker to contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions, even in the process of bunkering operations, they say.
