Dr. Piyush Raj, Head, Maritime Technology & Innovation, DNV, on Tuesday (13 October) moderated a panel discussion AI in Bunkering Trading & Forecasting on the transformative role of artificial intelligence in bunker trading and forecasting.
The session carried out at the Pre-Conference Symposium of the 24th Singapore International Bunkering Conference and Exhibition (SIBCON 2026) highlighted how AI is rapidly evolving from basic predictive tools into complex systems capable of processing diverse variables, including geopolitical shifts, weather patterns, and regulatory changes.
The discussion emphasised a fundamental shift in decision-making. Rather than relying on a single “magic” value, modern AI allows organizations to analyse distributions, options, and ranges.
Furthermore, AI technology has moved beyond simple chatbots, now integrating directly into organizational workflows to assist with RFQ comparisons, supplier benchmarking, and audit trails.
Dr. Raj noted that while AI offers significant value through early warnings and stress testing, it also presents potential failure modes, such as model drift, data issues, and algorithmic bias.
To successfully scale AI implementation, he argued that organisations must prioritise trust-building measures, including robust security frameworks, clear accountability, and explainable AI controls.
