Pirates board Singapore-registered tanker “Success 9”, Singaporean on board

MPA received a report that the tanker was boarded by unidentified persons at 300 nautical miles off the Abidjan Coast, Cote d’lvoire on 10 April; 20 crew members onboard including a Singaporean.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) on Tuesday (11 April) confirmed Singaporean-registered oil tanker Success 9 was boarded by pirates on 10 April. 

MPA said it received a report that the tanker was boarded by unidentified persons at about 300 nautical miles off the Abidjan Coast, Cote d’lvoire at about 10 pm (Singapore time). 

“There are 20 crew of various nationalities onboard the vessel, of which one of them is a Singapore citizen,” it said. 

“MPA is working closely with the ship owner, Monrovia Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre and the Information Fusion Centre at the Changi Command and Control Centre to monitor the situation and render the necessary assistance.”

According to the Maritime Domain Awareness for Trade-Gulf of Guinea (MDAT GOG), which flagged the incident, issued a warning on 10 April that it was made aware “unknown number of persons” boarded a MT about 300 nautical miles south of Abidjan city, West Africa. MDAT GOG added the situation is still ongoing.
