Pacific Basin’s bunker unit to be rebranded into new Sustainable Energy Solutions

Hong Kong-listed dry bulk shipping company Pacific Basin Shipping Limited (Pacific Basin) on Monday (8 December) announced a strategic initiative to transform its bunker team into a new Sustainable Energy Solutions team in a step to enhance the company’s competitiveness in a rapidly evolving maritime and energy landscape.

The company said the move aligns with Pacific Basin’s decarbonisation and optimisation initiatives and is designed to position the company at the forefront of maritime decarbonisation compliance and related monetisation opportunities, while enabling the company to deliver a broader suite of value-added services as customers’ needs change.

This transition coincides with Rakesh Sharma’s retirement in the summer of 2026 after 15 years of successful leadership of Pacific Basin’s bunker team.

To lead this transformation, Pacific Basin has appointed Henrik Røjel as Head Sustainable Energy Solutions, effective from February 2026.

Previously serving with DS Norden, Røjel brings extensive experience in future fuels and decarbonisation and is expected to help Pacific Basin to fast-track its capabilities such as monetising alternative fuels through Book & Claim and carbon credit trading while optimising its approach to compliance with national, regional and global maritime GHG reduction regulations.

In addition to his operational experience, Røjel has held board-level positions and serves on the Advisory Board of the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. These are all credentials that will be invaluable in Pacific Basin’s drive to expand its innovative energy-related offerings, future-proof its business and enhance its position at the forefront of sustainable shipping.

James Chesman, Director of Operations, said: “The formation of our Sustainable Energy Solutions team marks a significant milestone in our wider journey to deliver sustainable shipping solutions for our customers.

“Henrik’s experience in future fuels and monetising decarbonisation initiatives, combined with the talent and experience of our existing bunker team, will enable us to unlock new opportunities and enhance Pacific Basin’s position as a leader in the maritime energy transition.”
