Japanese shipping company NYK Line on Wednesday (6 October) introduced its group’s efforts toward zero-emission shipping during a liquefied natural gas (LNG) conference.
The LNG Producer-Consumer Conference 2021 has been held annually since 2012 as a platform for cooperation between producing and consuming countries to share the long-term supply and demand outlook for LNG and to make the trading market more transparent.
The tenth year conference discussed the roles and expectations that LNG will play in the next decade amid the global trend toward decarbonisation.
Toshi Nakamura, executive officer at NYK, participated in the session “The Way of Producing and Using ‘Clean LNG’” and talked about NYK’s LNG bunkering business as a bridge solution, compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) regulations on reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, the issuance of Japan’s first transition bond, and the future utilization of ammonia-fueled vessels.
Nakamura shared NYK on 3 February releasing the NYK Group ESG Story, which aims to further integrate ESG into the company’s management strategy and promotes activities that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) through business activities.
To strongly promote ESG management, the NYK Group encourages new value creation as a sustainable solution provider through a business strategy that includes activities to achieve zero-emission ships.
As such, NYK is positioning LNG fuel as a bridge solution until marine fuels that have a lower environmental impact, such as hydrogen and ammonia, can be utilised to realise future zero-emission ships.
