NYK Group on Thursday (30 September) said it is aiming to set a long-term ambition of net-zero emissions of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) by 2050 for its oceangoing businesses.

The group’s entire roadmap for GHG reduction includes non-oceangoing businesses, which will be announced separately and prior to its new medium-term management plan scheduled to be released in FY 2022.

“NYK has been making efforts to reduce GHG emissions from ships, as well as achieve zero emissions, but in recent years the worldwide demand for decarbonisation has accelerated further in the oceangoing shipping industry,” it says.

“In accordance with this worldwide demand, NYK has made a decision to establish this net-zero target so that the group can continue to be essential to society and industry.”

On 3 February, NYK Group released the “NYK Group ESG Story” promoting activities that contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SGD) through business activities.

“This net-zero emissions target is a clear determination by the NYK Group for its oceangoing business to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050,” it states.

“In the future, the NYK Group will encourage new value creation as a sustainable solution provider by deepening cooperation not only within the Group but also with stakeholders and accelerating initiatives for decarbonisation in the oceangoing shipping industry.”
