Jamaica is currently “well advanced” in working on a legislation to create a regulatory framework to support its bunkering industry, says Transport and Mining Minister, Hon. Robert Montague, according to state-owned media Jamaica Information Service (JIS).
Montague was delivering a keynote address at the opening ceremony for the Second International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) Caribbean Bunker Conference on Wednesday (11 September) when he shared the development.
He shared the legislation is going through the final stages of the parliamentary process, and it will also be used to address matters relating to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL).
The legislation’s provisions will facilitate the “licensing of bunker operators and their vessels to ensure that the highest levels of safety and protection of the maritime environment… [are] achieved in the carriage and transfer of fuel in Jamaica,” he said, as quoted by JIS.
