The LNG bunker vessel, set to be operated by marine fuel supplier Peninsula in Gibraltar, was launched at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea this week, according to Peninsula on Thursday (23 February).
“Earlier this week the joint project hit an important milestone as the Levante LNG was launched by South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard,” the firm said in a social media post.
“Whilst there is still much work to do before she is considered fully operational, it is exciting to see the project move closer to successful completion.”
The bunker vessel will be exclusively operated by Peninsula for an initial period of seven years.
Post-delivery, which is expected in Summer 2023, the Levante LNG will operate along the Strait of Gibraltar and Spanish Mediterranean ports.
Peninsula and Scale Gas (Enagás) first announced a Joint Venture in June 2021 to construct the 12,500-cbm LNG bunker vessel.
Manifold Times previously reported Peninsula will supply LNG as marine fuel to vessels at the Port of Algeciras, where the vessel will be based, and in the Strait of Gibraltar.
The vessel will use Enagás’ regasification plants, predominantly in Huelva, as LNG loading points.
