CSSC receives CCS AiP for China’s first truck-to-ship methanol bunkering safety measures

China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) subsidiary China Shipbuilding Hengyu Energy (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., on Wednesday (24 May) said it was awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate by China Classification Society (CCS) for China’s first truck-to ship methanol bunkering safety measures.
China Shipbuilding Hengyu said this is another set of green and low-carbon refuelling safety measures approved after similar liquefied natural gas (LNG) truck-to ship procedures were established.
The firm focused on the standardisation and scientific research of methanol bunkering services, and compiled the newly-approved design scheme.
The AiP comes following CSSC Hengyu Energy holding a special qualitative risk assessment and analysis meeting for methanol refuelling in March this year. CCS, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (SWS) , Jiangsu University of Science and Technology and other experts conducted a rigorous Hazard Identification (HAZID) and Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) study on the possible risks and dangerous scenarios that may occur during the implementation of methanol bunkering.
China Shipbuilding Hengyu also embarked on research on methanol bunkering technology where it designed and developed a mobile methanol bunkering test device that is skid-mounted to move into bunkering position towards ships in China, and completed the “Research Report on Methanol Ship Refuelling Test Technology”.
In March 2022, a bunkering operation of the first domestic methanol-fuelled ship was successfully completed, achieving the first bunkering of methanol dual fuel ships in China.
