CSSC, COSCO firms receive AiP from CCS, ABS for design of ammonia-fuelled VLCC

09 Nov 2021

An ammonia-fuelled Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) jointly designed and developed by research institute China Shipbuilding Corporation 708, COSCO Shipping Energy and COSCO Shipping Heavy Industries have obtained an Approval in Principle (AiP) from China Classification Society (CCS) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

The design aims to apply innovative technologies to introduce liquefied ammonia as an alternative fuel to meet the shipping industry’s demand for emission reduction, according to China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) on Monday (8 November).

Ammonia is one of the alternative fuels that does not produce carbon dioxide (CO2) emission and is easy to store and transport.

The VLCC ship type design was based on the latest generation of the 310,000 dwt VLCC platform developed by the 708 Research Institute.

The ammonia fuel main engine manufactured by MAN  is equipped with two 6,000 cubic meters C-type ammonia fuel tanks. The vessel will have endurance to meet its round-trip voyage to the Middle East route.
