French shipping giant CMA CGM reportedly signed an agreement with China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) on 6 April in Beijing for two types of dual-fuel vessels that can be powered by methanol or LNG bunker fuel, according to China-based media reports on Saturday (8 April).
The agreement includes the construction of 16 ultra-large container ships, in a deal worth more than 21 billion Yuan (USD 3 billion), setting a new record for the largest order of large container ships in China’s shipbuilding industry.
The order includes 12 15,000TEU methanol dual-fuel powered large container ships and four 23,000 TEU liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel powered ultra-large container ships.
The order is said to mark the first time CSSC has undertaken a single large order for methanol-fuelled container ships.
The order for methanol dual-fuel vessels will be built by Jiangnan Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC). Each of the ships will have a total length of 366 metres, a molded width of 51 metres and a molded depth of 30.2 metres, and can carry 156,000 tonnes of cargo.
Meanwhile, the four LNG dual-fuel power ultra-large container ships signed this time are upgraded versions of the nine ships of the same type that were delivered in June 2021. The four ships will be built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of CSSC.
According to the China Chamber of Commerce to the EU, the agreement was signed during a visit by French President Emmanual Macron.
