Classification society Korean Register (KR) recently published guidelines to provide test requirements and technical information necessary for ships intending to apply onboard hybrid electric power systems in order to ensure the safety and reliability of such systems.

The classification society said in general, ships use generators as the primary generating source and in recent years, due to technological developments in battery systems and fuel cell systems.

It added that with the strengthening of environmental regulations, the application of hybrid electric power systems combining generators, battery systems, fuel cell systems, and other similar technologies has been increasing.

“Through such hybrid electric power systems, the operational efficiency and economic performance of ships can be Improved,” it said.

“By applying hybrid electric power systems to ships, benefits such as enhanced safety and reliability, improved operational efficiency, reduced fuel consumption, and reduced environmental footprint can be expected.”

The guidelines apply to ships designed, constructed, or converted with the application of hybrid electric power systems composed of two or more different types of generating sources or stored electrical energy.
