Global oil and shipping group Monjasa on Tuesday (28 March) confirmed pirates have boarded Liberian-flagged oil tanker Monjasa Reformer  in West Africa’s Gulf of Guinea, according to several news reports.

The firm, in a statement, said the incident took place southwest of Port Pointe-Noire, Congo.

All 16 crew members on board Monjasa Reformer have sought refuge in a citadel, a safe room on the ship, in line with the on board anti-piracy emergency protocol.

Monjasa, said: “On board communications channels are currently down and we are working with the local authorities to establish communication to understand the situation on board and provide all the support needed by the crew to overcome these dreadful events,” the company said in its official statement issued from Denmark this morning.

The company’s spokesperson added its thoughts are with the crew and their relatives in these hours.

The British-French operation Maritime Domain Awareness for Trade Gulf of Guinea (MDAT-GoG) issued its latest boarding warning report on 25 March that MDAT GoG is requesting Masters within the vicinity to report any further sighting of the vessel.
