Shipowners should use pandemic downtime to retrofit, advises Wärtsilä

With most retrofits requiring docking, the pandemic offers an economically sound opportunity to upgrade old ships into leaner vessels for the future, it said.

Maritime technology group Wärtsilä on Friday (18 December) said the coronavirus crisis has seen different segments in the maritime industry retrofitting their vessels with more efficient and clean technologies.

While some shipowners struggle to maintain operations and are furloughing vessels, others are using the downtime to prepare their fleets to meet the IMO’s regulatory targets aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, it noted.

With half of Wärtsilä’s retrofits requiring docking or a period of out-of-service, the unprecedented crisis has offered an economically sound opportunity to upgrade and transform old ships into leaner and cleaner vessels fit for the future.

Wärtsilä outlined the following reasons why shipowners should seize the pandemic-related downtime to retrofit their vessels to be ready for future environmental regulations:

A cost-competitive investment

“The IMO emission targets for 2030 and 2050 have not changed because of the pandemic. If it was challenging before, now it is even more so for our customers because of a strong volatility in the market. However, all shipowners still face those fixed deadlines,” states Giulio Tirelli, Director of Business Development at Wärtsilä Marine Power.

For specific, cost-sensitive markets, like the merchant one, the recent pandemic economic crisis put even stronger pressure on exploring upgrade solutions which should be, at the same time, cost competitive and significantly improve the emissions profile, Tirelli adds.

“The latest rules and regulations put pressure on the bulker segment. For such a standardized segment, where the attention to the cost profile is at the highest levels in the marine industry, it is of utmost importance to find a cost-competitive investment that drives the emission-limit achievement. A few months before the pandemic, we signed a contract to introduce the marine sector’s first hybrid installation for a bulk carrier, a solution which is capable of positively influencing both aspects,” highlights Tirelli.

The innovative retrofit is being installed on the M/V ‘Paolo Topic’ (link) and will see solar panels installed on the weather deck for the first time in the bulk carrier industry. “It offers benefits on emissions and an economically sound investment with a good payback time. So far, the pandemic has been slowing down the delivery of this project, which will happen during the next few months,” he notes.

Research and pilot green tech

There are many fleet owners seeking to meet the new regulations and are trying to find out which technologies will help them to be more competitive with their customers, while at the same time conserving cash. “We are seeing a lot of interest related to efficiency and emissions improvements,” says Sean Carey, Director of Project Sales at Wärtsilä North America, who adds that interest is generally related to vessel electrification, hybridisation, use of new greener fuels, as well as upgrades to engines and propulsion systems.

When asked whether any segment has been particularly active, he adds to Tirelli’s comments about bulkers and container vessels needing to prepare for the new emissions targets. “It’s challenging for them to find ‘easy wins’ to install on their vessels. We’ve been working with that market to dream up the next things we can do,” answers Carey.

Since the obstacle for most segments this year has been cost, Carey advises economically cautious shipowners to use the time to research and pilot what could be done in the future. “Now is a good moment to work with green technology companies, like Wärtsilä, to discuss what can be done to ensure that the coming emissions challenges can be met. We can help them be more efficient, with greener technologies and help them to win with their customers,” he says.

Effectiveness and economic soundness

While the IMO’s 2030 and 2050 targets relate to CO2 emissions, the global shipping regulator has also introduced a new upper limit on the sulphur oxide (SOx) content of ships’ fuel oil at the start of the year. Known as IMO 2020, the reduced limit is mandatory for all vessels operating outside certain designated areas.

Scrubbers are a common after-treatment method to reduce SOx emissions, although Tirelli adds that eliminating it at the source is another approach to meeting the sulphur cap. “Either you switch to low-carbon fuels, like switching from diesel to liquefied natural gas (LNG), or you can increase your efficiency by reducing the need for energy from the vessel,” he advises.

“We are going in the direction of fuel flexibility, with the utilisation of non-traditional fuels, like LNG and ammonia. However, the other big factor in reaching the CO2 targets is increasing efficiency. How do you do that? You act on technologies, like hybridisation or reducing hull resistance by applying an air lubrication system, which involves creating a sheet of air to decrease drag,” explains Tirelli.

It noted the winding up application is directed to be heard before the Judge sitting in the General Division of the High Court at 10am on 31 July.

Any creditor or contributory of the company desiring to support or oppose the making of an order on the winding up application may appear at the time of hearing by himself or his counsel for that purpose.

World Fuel and partners complete first green methanol bunkering of car carrier in Shanghai

Marine fuel provider World Fuel on Tuesday (21 July) said it successfully completed the first green methanol bunkering of M/V Arctic Tern, with EUKOR Car Carriers and SIPG Energy at the Port of Shanghai. 

Arctic Tern is the first vessel in the new Shaper Class series of car carriers. 

The operation involved the delivery of approximately 2,800 MT of green methanol to Arctic Tern via a ship-to-ship transfer using SIPG Energy’s dedicated methanol bunkering vessel M/V Hai Gang Zhi Yuan, the largest vessel of its kind in operation. 

The bunkering operation was carried out at Haitong Terminal, Waigaoqiao Port Area, Shanghai Port, with cargo handling operations conducted simultaneously during bunkering.

This marks EUKOR Car Carriers’ first green methanol operation and the first time Arctic Tern has bunkered methanol since its delivery on 9 July. The operation marked the first bunkering at Shanghai Port of green methanol produced locally in Shanghai for an international PCTC operator. 

It also demonstrated the city’s integrated green methanol value chain, spanning local production, storage and bunkering, and established a replicable “Shanghai Model” for green methanol supply.

World Fuel arranged the supply and delivery of the fuel on behalf of EUKOR Car Carriers, working with SIPG Energy as the physical supplier at the Port of Shanghai.

The green methanol supplied was produced from municipal solid waste, ISCC-EU certified, and had a carbon intensity value below 25 gCO₂e/MJ.

Arctic Tern is the first of fourteen Shaper Class vessels ordered by Wallenius Wilhelmsen. With a capacity of 9,300 car equivalent units and methanol dual-fuel capability, the vessel will be operated by EUKOR Car Carriers, jointly owned by Wallenius Wilhelmsen and Hyundai Motor Group. Following her first green methanol bunkering, Arctic Tern will continue her maiden voyage from Asia to Europe.

“This achievement reflects the strong collaboration between all parties involved. Together, we have shown how partnerships across the maritime value chain can help make lower-emission fuels available and operationally viable at scale.”

This bunkering sets a new record for the largest single SIMOPs green methanol bunkering for PCTCs in China, marking another step in building Shanghai’s position as a global green energy hub for international shipping.”

This operation follows Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s announcement on 9 July that Arctic Tern would complete her first methanol bunkering shortly after delivery. The vessel entered service on routes between Asia and Europe immediately following handover from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing.

HPA and MB Energy develop safety concept for STS ammonia bunkering

The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and integrated energy company MB Energy on Tuesday (21 July) said they have completed a comprehensive risk analysis and developed a dedicated safety concept for ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering.

MB Energy said the analysis lays the groundwork for the safe introduction of ammonia as a future marine fuel.

“With our planned ammonia import terminal in Hamburg-Blumensand, MB Energy intends to provide the reliable land side supply infrastructure needed to support this transition across northern German ports,” it said in a social media post. 

Mabanaft Group was renamed to MB Energy last year and merged over 50 existing brands under one identity. 

Separately, HPA said the Port of Hamburg will become “bunker ready” for ammonia, laying the groundwork for safe and reliable ammonia bunkering in the future.

“The focus is in particular on container ships, cruise ships as well as RoRo and ConRo (Container/RoRo) ships,” it said. 

“We expect ammonia to establish itself as an alternative marine marine fuel in the coming years. With our preparatory work, we are already creating the conditions to welcome the first ammonia-powered ships in Hamburg and to bunker them safely.:

HPA added that the import terminal for ammonia planned by MB Energy from 2029 will make a decisive contribution to ensuring the reliable availability of ammonia as a bunker fuel in northern German ports in the long term. 

“The use of an ammonia bunker barge is considered a possible addition to the landside infrastructure to enable ship bunkering in the port and beyond in the future,” it said.
