The Port of Marseille FOS on Wednesday (17 June), a member of the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF), said it is seeking to promote liquified natural gas (LNG) as bunker fuel and become the LNG hub for the Mediterranean.

After a first LNG ship-to-ship bunkering operation in early May, the port said it repeated the operation on Monday (15 June) with Costa and Shell.

With this second bunkering operation, the port notes it has demonstrated its expertise in the field and is positioning itself to be able to develop this type of refuelling operation.

The Port of Marseille Fos has contributed to the working groups led by SGMF, alongside LNG operators, in order to introduce all the safety conditions that meet European and global standards in this regard.

The port notes that its industrial partners and shipping companies are committed to providing efficient LNG bunkering in the Mediterranean as LNG powered cruise ships have been calling at Marseille since 2019 and it has secured CMA CGM’s 15,000 TEU container ship as a client from 2021.

In 2021, the Port of Marseille Fos said it will offer its customers an LNG bunkering vessel and the Fos Cavaou LNG terminal will be adapted to load micro-methane carriers for Elengy.
