The port of Killini in Greece is ready to celebrate the first shore-to-ship electrical supply connection in Eastern Mediterranean coming Thursday (20 December, 2018), says EU energy association Electrification in the Eastern Mediterranean (elemed).

The Ro-pax Fior Di Levante is scheduled to plug into the facility co-funded by elemed.

Along with the opening, Killini Port Authority and elemed partners will host a special event entitled: Eastern Mediterranean achieves reduced environmental footprint at the port of Killini.

“Through the installation of this green pioneering cold-ironing facility, developed within the European co-funded programme elemed, the port of Killini achieves a decline in air pollution, upgrades port facilities while paving the way for other Greek ports to become emissions-free hubs in the Eastern Mediterranean region,” it says.

The Elemed project aims to realise the vision of zero emissions, zero noise, zero impact for close to port urban, coastal and insular areas by creating an electrical infrastructure for port and marine applications.

The project, which is co-funded by the European Union, involves three countries: Greece, Italy and Cyprus, six European ports (Piraeus, Patras, Lemesos, Venice, Heraklion, Igoumenitsa) as well as the Revithoussa LNG terminal.
