Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) Monday says it has selected several shipbuilders to build eco-friendly mega containerships to fulfil its ‘Capacity of 1 Million TEU’ strategy.

It will choose Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and Samsung Heavy Industries for the construction of seven and five 23,000 TEU containerships respectively, for delivery in the second quarter of 2020.

HMM also selected Hyundai Heavy Industries to build eight 14,000 TEU containerships to be delivered in the second quarter of 2021.

The latest development builds upon a Request for Proposal (RFP) sent to shipbuilding companies on April 10, says HMM.

It formed a ‘newbuilding examination committee’ to thoroughly review all the conditions and selected shipbuilders followed by fair procedures.

Moving forward, HMM notes it will negotiate further details of new shipbuilding including prices and conclude the final agreement at a late date with the chosen yards.
