MPA: Singapore preparing industry for upcoming IMO 2020 regulations

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is taking steps to prepare the world’s biggest bunkering port for IMO 2020, says its Chief Executive.

Quah Ley Hoon was giving the opening address at the 2019 Nautical Institute Singapore Conference on Wednesday (15 May) when she spoke of initiatives to prepare the local shipping and bunkering industry for the new marine fuel sulphur cap regulation effective 1 January 2020.

“MPA has been consulting and working hard with the oil majors and the industry to prepare for this major milestone and transition,” she said.

“We have published two technical guidance booklets last year (one for Singapore-registered ships ships and another for ships calling at the Port of Singapore) and will be updating them in June this year.

“We have also published a list of IMO 2020 compliant fuel suppliers last month and encouraged companies to conduct trials and get their ships ready.”

Moving forward, Quah highlights MPA to be co-hosting a Seminar & Engagement Session with the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) on IMO 2020 Sulphur Limit on 13 June and another session in November.

“We further welcome your views on what more needs to be done for its implementation.  I hope that you will all be able to be there to contribute to the session,” she states.
